How to choose a GPS tracker for a fleet

What to check before buying trackers: data access, ignition and odometer, immobilizer support, sensors and how they connect to your software.

Data and connection

Make sure the tracker or its gateway can send position updates to your software over a standard method such as an HTTP request, and that you are not locked to one vendor.

Vehicle signals

Ignition status, speed and odometer are the minimum for good alerts and maintenance planning.

Optional extras

If you need recovery, ask whether the device can drive an immobilizer relay and accept commands. For refrigerated vehicles, check for temperature and humidity inputs. See cold chain monitoring.

Reliability

Look at offline behaviour, battery backup and how the device reports when it has no signal.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy trackers from my software vendor?

Not with FleetSense. Any tracker or gateway that can send position updates to the FleetSense endpoint with its API key can feed the system.
